Tim Murphy - Artist's Statement I like to think of my paintings as subconscious mirrors. The relationship between the viewer and my work is a personal one. The weightless flying figures are spiritually inspired to encourage a lighthearted fantasy for the viewer. I create narratives that are open ended and allow my subconscious to wander freely as I paint. Consequently, the story lines evolve as I work on each piece. I believe the personal interpretation of each viewer is valid. A painting may hold multiple meanings for the viewer and, over time, these meanings can change, as they do for me. My subjects are both specific people and amalgamations of people I know. The locations are based on places of personal significance and are not always consciously related to my choice of figures. I incorporate variations of traditional painting techniques to achieve an optical effect that invites viewers to enter these alternate worlds and discover what these mirrors hold for them.
